Executive Director Philippa Loengard was a panelist for a Copyright Clearance Center webinar on Tuesday, July 14 discussing the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Copyright Act, including how the Act has weathered the intervening decades and how it could approach future technological and legal change. The webinar is viewable at the Copyright Clearance Center's site.
The Kernochan Center filed an amicus brief in support of neither party in the en banc rehearing of Sedlik v. Von Drachenberg before the Ninth Circuit. The brief proposes a new substantial similarity test that properly focuses the inquiry on whether the alleged infringer has captured the authorial elements of the original author's work.

The Andrew D. Fried Memorial Prize, established in memory of Andrew D. Fried ’84 is awarded annually for the best student essay on a subject in the field of intellectual property and related law published in the Columbia Journal of Law and the Arts during the preceding year. This year, the winning essay was "The Sooner the Better? How to Optimize Bargaining Power When Serving Notice of Copyright Termination," by Rachel Altemose.

On April 16-17, the Berkeley Center for Law & Technology and the Kernochan Center for Law, Media and the Arts held the first of two bicoastal symposia: Origins, Evolution, and Possible Futures of the 1976 Copyright Act, at the University of California, Berkeley Law School. The first symposium examined the origins of the 1976 Act and its key reforms and features.
